Over the years, I have seen many "ghost hunters" present "evidence" of ghosts by producing images with round, glowing objects that appear to float within the scene.
While I have no doubt that spirits can manifest in this way, I often wonder about the legitimacy of the images and videos that I see from others. Basically stated, if I did not take the video or picture myself, I will have reservations about ones produced by others.
In observing these mystical blobs of supposed ectoplasm, there are specific things I look for to either support the theory of ghost orbs or to crush it.
Many people who get involved in the search for the paranormal do so because they saw someone else do it and it looked cool, or they want to try and become the newest and hottest paranormal celebrity. Neither is a good or valid reason to pursue this field. However, in doing so, I have seen people make claims that are either false or misunderstood. Many of these have to do with orbs.
An orb, in its simplest form, is thought to be the remaining energy of a living being who has passed. Basically, consciousness in a ball. While there are those who have indeed captured examples of this phenomenon, there are many others who have thought they had captured the spirit of the dead as an orb, when indeed it was not.
How Can We Tell?
First off allow me to say that there are only ideas and theories behind this; No hard proof. What I personally look for is how the object moves. If an orb is the electrical representation of consciousness, then it should move with a sense of awareness - as if it knows where it's going. It should possibly be methodical and thoughtful in its travels (eg, enters through a door, travels down a hallway, pauses, then turns right.)
If we are to compare this type of movement with, let's say dust, then we have a different type of movement. Dust, when viewed by an infrared camera, will look similar to snow billowing and will follow the path of airflow. Since dust particles have weight and mass, they will also fall to the ground.
Let's also take a look at lens flare. Lens flare is a natural effect that takes place when light enters the lens of a camera. Many times this can be fixed by attaching a simple lens hood to the camera (and yes, they make them for cell phones.) Most of the time, people do not notice this event taking place while taking the picture however, once they review the image they will be stymied by the weird light formation within the image.
The video below shows examples of these happenings.
As I mentioned earlier, I do believe that orbs can and do exist based on my own experiences. However, the likelihood of capturing a spirit orb is not as common as one would think. It's important to be objective, even in our own findings.
